A516Gr70: A Reliable Choice for High-Pressure Vessel Applications

A516Gr70 is a carbon-manganese steel plate under the ASTM A516 standard, specifically designed for pressure vessels operating under moderate to high temperatures. With a minimum yield strength of 260 MPa and tensile strength ranging from 485 to 620 MPa, it provides excellent toughness, formability, and weldability. Among the A516 grades (Gr55, Gr60, Gr65, and Gr70), Gr70 offers the highest strength and is particularly suited for demanding service conditions.

In pressure vessel applications, the material must withstand not only high internal pressure but also thermal cycles caused by heating and cooling. A516Gr70 excels in both these aspects due to its consistent impact properties and excellent through-thickness performance. It is widely adopted in industries such as petrochemical, LNG storage and transport, coal chemical engineering, and auxiliary equipment in nuclear power systems.

The material is also compatible with flame cutting, plasma cutting, and CNC processing. Welding techniques including SAW, SMAW, TIG, and MIG can be applied without compromising joint integrity. A516Gr70 supports additional testing such as ultrasonic testing (UT), post-weld heat treatment (PWHT), and can be certified to ASME or API standards. It is a preferred choice for international projects and is commonly exported to regions like the Middle East, Southeast Asia, Russia, and South America where pressure vessel demands are high.
